IELTS Speaking Section Analysis and Advice
This image contains IELTS Speaking test questions from Parts 1, 2, and 3. Below is a detailed breakdown along with sample answers and tips for each part.
PART 1: Introduction & Interview
This section tests your ability to speak about familiar topics. The sample topic here is “Television programmes.”
Sample Responses
โ
Where do you usually watch TV programmes/shows? [Why?/Why not?]
“I usually watch TV shows on my laptop because I prefer the flexibility of choosing when and where to watch. Streaming platforms like Netflix and YouTube make it easier to watch on the go, rather than sitting in front of a TV at a fixed time.”
โ
Whatโs your favorite TV programme/show? [Why?]
“One of my favorite TV shows is โBreaking Badโ because of its gripping storyline and complex characters. The way the main character transforms throughout the series is fascinating, and the suspense keeps me hooked.”
โ
Are there any programmes/shows you donโt like watching? [Why?/Why not?]
“Iโm not a big fan of reality TV shows because I find them too dramatic and sometimes unrealistic. I prefer shows that are either educational or have well-developed storylines.”
โ
Will you watch more or fewer TV programmes/shows in the future? [Why?/Why not?]
“I think I will watch fewer TV shows in the future because I am becoming busier with work and studies. Also, I am trying to spend more time reading and engaging in outdoor activities rather than sitting in front of a screen.”
Tips for Part 1
๐น Keep your answers natural and conversational (avoid memorized responses).
๐น Give specific reasons or examples to support your answer.
๐น Use a mix of simple and complex sentences for a higher score.
PART 2: Individual Long Turn
Topic: Describe someone you know who has started a business.
You should say:
- Who this person is
- What work this person does
- Why this person decided to start a business
- Explain whether you would like to do the same kind of work
Sample Response (Band 7.5-8)
“Iโd like to talk about my cousin, Sarah, who started her own bakery business two years ago. She was always passionate about baking, and after completing her degree in business management, she decided to open a small cafรฉ in our town.
Sarahโs bakery specializes in homemade cakes, pastries, and custom-designed desserts for special occasions. Her business quickly became popular because she focuses on using organic ingredients and offers unique flavors that arenโt commonly available elsewhere.
The main reason she started this business was her love for baking and her desire to be independent. She always wanted to be her own boss rather than work a 9-to-5 job. Initially, it was challenging, but through social media marketing and word-of-mouth recommendations, her business has grown steadily.
Personally, I admire her dedication, but I donโt think I would start the same kind of business. While I enjoy baking as a hobby, I am more interested in the tech industry. However, seeing Sarahโs success has definitely inspired me to consider entrepreneurship in the future.”
Tips for Part 2
๐น Use the one-minute preparation time wiselyโwrite down key points, not full sentences.
๐น Structure your response: Introduction โ Description โ Reason โ Personal Opinion.
๐น Speak for at least 1.5โ2 minutes to maximize your score.
๐น Use a variety of tenses and vocabulary (e.g., “her business has grown steadily” shows present perfect tense).
PART 3: Discussion
Choosing Work – Example Questions & Sample Responses
โ
What kinds of jobs do young people not want to do in your country?
“In my country, many young people avoid jobs that are physically demanding, such as construction work or farming. These jobs are often seen as low-paying and less prestigious compared to office jobs. Additionally, with advancements in technology, more young people prefer careers in IT, business, or creative industries.”
โ
Who is best at advising young people about choosing a job: teachers or parents?
“I believe both teachers and parents play important roles, but in different ways. Parents know their childrenโs strengths and interests better, so they can offer personalized advice. However, teachers have a broader understanding of different career options and can provide professional guidance. Ideally, young people should consider both perspectives before making a decision.”
โ
Is money always the most important thing when choosing a job?
“While money is a significant factor, I donโt think it should be the most important one. Job satisfaction, work-life balance, and career growth opportunities are equally crucial. Many people choose lower-paying jobs because they enjoy the work or find it meaningful, such as teachers or social workers. In the long run, a fulfilling job is more important than just a high salary.”
Tips for Part 3
๐น Give detailed answers (aim for at least 3โ5 sentences).
๐น Support your opinion with examples or comparisons.
๐น Use a range of advanced vocabulary and sentence structures (e.g., “Job satisfaction, work-life balance, and career growth opportunities are equally crucial.”).
