I know it’s messy here but will clean it up with time. Some of my students asked me the difference and as usual, I come to their rescue. Let’s go through the 3,shall we?
1. The Hyphen (-)
- Used to join words in compound words or to separate syllables of a single word.
- Example: well-known, two-thirds.
2. En Dash (–):
- Slightly longer than a hyphen.
- Used to represent a range, such as in dates or numerical ranges.
- Example: 2010–2015, pages 10–20.
3. The Em Dash (—):
- Longer than both the hyphen and en dash.
- Used to set off information within a sentence for emphasis or to indicate a break in thought.
- Example: The decision—made after careful consideration—was final.
See, wasn’t that fast? Now you know 3 powerful punctuation marks. Go write with confidence and power.
