The New TOEFL iBT Starting 2026

Starting January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT® will be undergoing significant updates that modernize its format, content, scoring, and test experience. Here’s what’s changing and what to expect:

1. New Test Format & Adaptive Design

  • Multistage Adaptive Test: The Reading and Listening sections will adjust in real-time to your performance, providing a more personalized and efficient testing experience
  • Shorter, modern content: Gone are passages on Greek mythology—instead, expect relatable, real-world materials like magazine excerpts and campus conversations.

2. Reimagined Task Types

Reading (≈18–27 minutes; 35–48 questions)

  • Complete the Words
  • Read in Daily Life (e.g., posters, emails, menus)
  • Read an Academic Text

Listening (≈18–27 minutes; 35–45 questions)

  • Listen and Choose a Response
  • Listen to a Conversation
  • Listen to an Announcement
  • Listen to an Academic Talk

Writing (≈23 minutes; ~12 tasks)

  • Build a Sentence (unscramble a sentence)
  • Write an Email
  • Write for an Academic Discussion

Speaking (≈8 minutes; ~11 tasks)

  • Listen and Repeat (seven progressively harder sentences, no prep time)
  • Take an Interview (respond to 3–4 follow-up interview-style questions, ~45 seconds each)(My Speaking Score, Test Resources, ETS, Shiksha)

3. Redesigned Scoring System

  • New scale: Scores will now be on a 1–6 scale (including half-points like 4.5, 5.5). This aligns more clearly with the CEFR standard.
  • Dual reporting: For the first two years (through the end of 2028), you’ll receive your score in both the new 1–6 scale and the classic 0–120 format to help with the transition.
  • Overall score: It will be the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half-point (e.g., 5.25 → 5.5).

4. Enhanced Test Experience

  • Faster score reporting: Expect your results within 72 hours.
  • Upgraded equipment: Test centers will use improved custom “stereophones” in partnership with Koss.(ETS, Test Resources)
  • Expanded prep resources: New materials tailored for the updated test will become available starting July 2025.(ETS, Test Resources)
  • Smoother registration and check-in: Simplified, personalized workflows, plus AI-assisted identity verification and in-house proctoring enhancements (rolled out since May 2025 for Home Edition).(ETS)
