What to Expect on the OET Exam in All Areas

The Occupational English Test (OET) is a standardized English language test designed specifically for healthcare professionals. It assesses your ability to communicate effectively in English in a healthcare setting. The OET covers four language skills:

Listening

Time

Around 40 minutes

Marking

  • The Listening sub-test offers a total of 42 marks. Part A contributes 24 marks, Part B contributes 6 marks, and Part C contributes 12 marks.

Test Structure:

  • Part A: Consultation extracts
  • Part B: Short workplace extracts
  • Part C: Presentation extracts

Reading

  • 60 minutes

Marking:

  • In the Reading sub-test, a total of 42 marks are available. Part A contributes 20 marks, Part B contributes 6 marks, and Part C contributes 16 marks of your final mark

Test structure

  • Part A: Expeditious reading task (15 minutes)
  • Parts B and C: Careful reading tasks (45 minutes)
  • 60 minutes, three texts related to healthcare, followed by multiple-choice questions.

Prepairing Material

Writing

Time

  • 45 minutes

Marking

  • Your performance is evaluated by two OET assessors using the official OET Writing criteria.
  • The objective is to compose a letter in response to a set of notes. There is a five-minute reading period at the beginning, followed by 40 minutes for the actual writing.

Speaking

Time

Twenty minutes.

Marking

The Speaking sub-test is recorded, and the audio is evaluated by two authorized OET assessors using the official OET Linguistic and Clinical Communication Criteria.

Test Structure

There are two role plays to accomplish. For each one, you are granted three minutes for preparation. Each role play has a duration of approximately five minutes.
