Some key biblical figures who either lived in or had significant experiences in Africa. Let’s go through them
1. Abraham
- Genesis 12:10-20: Abraham (then called Abram) went to Egypt. He went with his wife Sarai (later Sarah) to escape a famine in Canaan. They stayed in Egypt for a period, during which Pharaoh took Sarai into his household, believing she was Abrahamโs sister. After realizing she was his wife, Pharaoh returned her to Abraham and sent them away from Egypt.
2. Hagar
- Genesis 16 and Genesis 21: Hagar was an Egyptian servant of Sarah and the mother of Abraham’s son Ishmael. Hagar fled from Sarahโs harsh treatment. She encountered an angel of the Lord in the wilderness. She then returned to give birth to Ishmael. Later, she and Ishmael were sent away, and they wandered in the desert before God provided for them.
3. Joseph
- Genesis 37โ50: Joseph, one of Jacobโs sons, was sold into slavery by his brothers and taken to Egypt. He became a servant in Potipharโs house, was wrongfully imprisoned, and later rose to become the second-most powerful man in Egypt after interpreting Pharaohโs dreams. Josephโs story is one of redemption, and he helped save Egypt and his family during a severe famine.
4. Jacob (Israel)
- Genesis 46-50: Jacob (also known as Israel) moved to Egypt with his entire family to reunite with his son Joseph during the famine. He and his descendants settled in the land of Goshen in Egypt. They lived there for several generations until the time of the Exodus.
5. Moses
- Exodus 1โ14: Moses was born in Egypt during a time when the Israelites were enslaved. He was raised in Pharaoh’s household after being found in a basket in the Nile River. As an adult, Moses fled Egypt after killing an Egyptian overseer. He later returned to lead the Israelites out of slavery during the Exodus. Moses spent a significant portion of his life in Africa, leading the Israelites out of Egypt through the Red Sea into the wilderness.
6. Pharaohโs Daughter
- Exodus 2:5-10: Pharaoh’s daughter is not a prominent biblical figure in the rest of the Bible. However, she played a crucial role in saving Moses’ life. She found the infant Moses in a basket along the Nile River and raised him as her own son in the Egyptian royal court.
7. Zipporah
- Exodus 2:21: Zipporah was the wife of Moses and the daughter of Jethro, a Midianite priest. While not Egyptian, her fatherโs land of Midian is often associated with the region near the Sinai Peninsula, a part of the broader area connected to northern Africa.
8. The Israelites (Children of Israel)
- Exodus 1โ14: The Israelites lived in Egypt for several generations after Joseph brought his family there. Over time, the Egyptians enslaved them. They remained in Egypt for about 400 years. Moses led them out during the Exodus. This period is one of the most significant biblical connections between Israel and Egypt.
9. The Queen of Sheba
- 1 Kings 10:1-13 and 2 Chronicles 9:1-12: The Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon in Jerusalem after hearing of his wisdom. While her exact location is debated, Sheba is often identified with the region that is now Ethiopia or Yemen. This connection links her to Africa.
10. Jeremiah
- Jeremiah 43:5-7: After the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, the prophet Jeremiah and others fled to Egypt. The Bible records that they lived in cities like Tahpanhes, and Jeremiah continued to prophesy while in Egypt.
11. Ebed-Melech
- Jeremiah 38:7-13: Ebed-Melech was an Ethiopian eunuch who served in the court of King Zedekiah of Judah. He courageously helped the prophet Jeremiah when he was thrown into a cistern, pleading with the king to have him rescued.
12. The Ethiopian Eunuch
- Acts 8:26-39: In the New Testament, an unnamed Ethiopian eunuch was a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. He encountered the apostle Philip on his way back from Jerusalem. Philip explained the Scriptures to him, and the Ethiopian eunuch became a believer and was baptized. This story indicates an early connection between Christianity and Ethiopia.
13. Mary, Joseph, and Jesus
- Matthew 2:13-15: After the birth of Jesus, Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt with the infant Jesus. They wanted to escape King Herodโs order to kill all male infants in Bethlehem. They lived in Egypt for a time until Herodโs death, fulfilling the prophecy, โOut of Egypt I called my sonโ (Matthew 2:15).
