Lesson Plan: Present Perfect Tense
Objective:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand and use the present perfect tense correctly in both spoken and written communication.
Level: Intermediate (B1)
Duration: 60 minutes
Materials:
- Whiteboard or flipchart
- Markers
- Handout with practice exercises (multiple-choice questions and fill-in-the-blanks)
- Answer key
Warm-Up (5 minutes):
- Begin the lesson by asking students to share one thing they have done today or recently using the present perfect tense. For example, “I have eaten breakfast,” “I have watched a movie,” etc. Encourage other students to ask follow-up questions using the present perfect tense as well.
Presentation (15 minutes):
- Write the present perfect tense formula on the board: Subject + have/has + past participle.
- Explain that we use the present perfect tense to talk about actions that happened at an unspecified time in the past or actions that have a connection to the present.
- Provide examples of sentences using the present perfect tense and ask students to identify the subject, auxiliary verb, and past participle in each sentence.
- Show pictures or use flashcards to illustrate the examples and help students grasp the concept visually.
Practice (25 minutes):
- Multiple-Choice Exercise: Distribute the handout with ten multiple-choice questions. Instruct students to choose the correct answer that completes each sentence using the present perfect tense.
Example: She __ her homework yet.
a) do
b) did
c) has done
d) have done - Fill in the Blanks: Next, have students complete sentences with the appropriate present perfect tense form of the verb. Provide the sentences on the handout.
Example: They __ a new car. (buy) - Pair Work: Divide students into pairs. Instruct them to take turns asking and answering questions using the present perfect tense. Encourage them to use the question word “Have you everโฆ?” For example, “Have you ever travelled to another country?” “Have you ever tried Kebab?”
Review and Feedback (10 minutes):
- Review the correct answers to the exercises as a class.
- Provide feedback and clarification on any common errors or questions students may have had during the practice.
Homework (optional):
- Assign a few sentences or a short paragraph for students to write using the present perfect tense. For example, they can write about their experiences, achievements, or recent activities.
