Academic Writing Task 1 (Graphs/Charts/Diagrams):
In Academic Writing Task 1, you’ll be presented with a visual representation of data such as a graph, table, chart, or diagram. Your task is to summarize, describe, or explain the information shown. It’s essential to structure your response into three key sections: the introduction, an overview, and the main features, all supported by details from the diagram.
Line Graph:
- Describes trends and changes over a period of time.
- Requires the analysis of data points and patterns.
Bar Chart:
- Presents categorical data with rectangular bars.
- Involves comparing quantities or values across different categories.
Pie Chart:
- Illustrates proportions or percentages of a whole.
- Focuses on displaying the distribution of parts within a given set.
Table:
- Presents data in tabular form.
- Requires summarizing and comparing information.
Diagram (Process/Cycle):
- Describes a sequence of steps in a process or a cycle.
- Requires understanding and explaining the flow of the depicted system.
Academic Writing Task 2 (Essay):
In Academic Writing Task 2, you’ll encounter a point of view, argument, or problem. The topics cover a wide range, including, health, history, entertainment, the environment, immigration, culture, and technology. You may need to agree or disagree with a viewpoint, discuss two opposing views, write about the pros and cons of a topic, or address a problem, its causes, and propose a solution. Your response for Academic Writing Task 2 should be in the format of an essay.
Opinion Essay:
- Requires expressing a clear opinion on a given topic.
- Supporting the opinion with reasons and examples.
- Structured into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Discussion Essay:
- Presents both sides of an argument objectively.
- Offers a balanced view and then states a personal opinion.
- Requires careful consideration of the arguments on both sides.
Problem-Solution Essay:
- Identifies a specific problem or issue.
- Proposes viable solutions and evaluates their effectiveness.
- Emphasizes the importance of implementing the suggested solutions.
Advantages and Disadvantages Essay:
- Discusses positive and negative aspects of a particular issue.
- Requires a balanced presentation of both sides.
- May involve providing personal insights or opinions.
General Training Writing Task 1:
In Writing Task 1, you’ll encounter a scenario that requires you to write a letter, either to ask for information or to clarify a situation. It could also involve suggesting improvements, like enhancing facilities at a library. Examiners will assess your skills in sharing general and factual information, expressing needs, preferences, opinions, and even addressing complaints.
Letter of Complaint:
- Involves expressing dissatisfaction with a product or service.
- Requires details about the issue and a request for resolution.
Letter of Request:
- Asks for information, assistance, or permission.
- Requires a clear and polite tone.
Letter of Apology:
- Expresses regret and seeks forgiveness for a mistake or inconvenience.
- Should convey sincerity and a willingness to make amends.
Letter of Explanation/Information:
- Provides information or explains a situation.
- Requires clarity and organization in presenting details.
General Training Writing Task 2 (Essay):
You need to write an essay about a viewpoint, argument, or problem. You’ll be graded on how well you share basic facts, explain a problem, suggest a solution, support an opinion, or review and question ideas, evidence, or an argument.
Advantages and Disadvantages Essay:
- Similar to the academic version but may focus on more everyday topics.
- Requires careful consideration of both positive and negative aspects.
