The Writing section of the TOEFL iBT test evaluates your ability to express yourself in written English within an academic context, presenting your ideas in a clear and well-structured manner.

This section comprises two writing tasks:

  • Integrated Writing Task (20 minutes) — You will read a brief passage and listen to a short lecture, then write a response based on the information provided.
  • Writing for an Academic Discussion Task (10 minutes) — You will express and support an opinion in an online classroom discussion.

You will type your responses using a computer keyboard.

The Writing section is expected to take approximately 29 minutes to complete.

Scoring for the writing tasks is conducted using the Writing Scoring Guides (Rubrics) by a combination of AI scoring and certified human raters. Raw scores are then converted into a scaled section score ranging from 0 to 30.

Good News

The writing tasks measure your English proficiency, so you don’t need deep knowledge on a specific topic to get a high score. Score raters recognize that each essay is a first draft, and you can receive a high score with an essay that contains some errors.
