The TOEFL iBT Speaking section evaluates your ability to communicate effectively in English within academic contexts. The four questions/tasks simulate real-life situations commonly encountered both inside and outside classrooms.
Question 1: Independent Speaking Task — You are required to rely solely on your own ideas, opinions, and experiences when providing your response.
Questions 2–4: Integrated Speaking Tasks — These tasks necessitate the integration of various English language skills, such as listening and speaking, or listening, reading, and speaking, similar to what you might encounter in academic or real-world scenarios.
Preparation: Before responding to each question, you will have 15–30 seconds to prepare, and your response will typically be 45 or 60 seconds long.
Response Method: Your responses will be recorded as you speak into the microphone during the test.
Test Duration: Completing the Speaking section typically takes around 16 minutes.
Scoring: Speaking tasks are assessed using Speaking Scoring Guides (Rubrics) by both AI scoring and certified human raters. Raw scores are then converted into a scaled section score ranging from 0 to 30.
Note
Accents
The Speaking section includes native-speaker English accents from North America, the U.K., New Zealand or Australia to better reflect the variety of accents you might encounter while studying abroad. Only the first of the four items may have this accented speech.
