The TOEFL iBT Listening section is designed to assess your ability to understand spoken English, including conversations and lectures. It evaluates your skills in basic comprehension, understanding the speaker’s tone and certainty level, and making connections between pieces of information.
In this section, you will listen to a series of lectures and conversations, all of which use language commonly heard on university campuses. There are typically three lectures, each lasting between 3 to 5 minutes, some including classroom discussions, with six questions per lecture. Additionally, there are two conversations, each lasting 3 minutes, with five questions per conversation.
You are allowed to take notes while listening to the audio materials to help you answer the questions.
The expected time to complete the Listening section of the test is approximately 36 minutes.
