Jane: Peter, we need to talk.

Peter: Okay. What’s up?

Jane: I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and…I don’t think this is working out for us.

Peter: What are you talking about? Are you breaking up with me?

Jane: Yes… I’m sorry, but it’s not fair to keep leading you on when things aren’t going well between us. You deserve someone who can be honest with you and…I haven’t been.

Peter: What do you mean?

Jane: I mean, there have been some things I haven’t told you that should have come clean before now.

Peter: Like what?

Jane: (sigh) Remember that time I said I was staying late at work, but really I went out with my friends instead?

Peter: Yes…
Jane: And the time I said I wasn’t feeling well, but really I just didn’t feel like going out with your family?

Peter: Jane…why did you lie to me about those things?

Jane: I don’t know… I guess I was scared to tell you the truth and disappoint you. But I realize now that lying only makes everything worse, and our relationship can’t last if I can’t be honest with you.

Peter: I appreciate you finally telling me the truth, Jane, but why couldn’t you have done it earlier? Do you have any idea how much you had hurt me these past few months by pretending everything was okay when it wasn’t?

Jane: I know, and I am so sorry, Peter. It was wrong of me to treat you that way.

Peter: Well, I think I need some space now to clear my head. We both need some time apart to figure out where we go from here.

Jane: Okay…I understand. Just know that I will always care about you and want what’s best for you.

Peter: Yeah…I hope so. Take care, Jane.

Jane: You too, Peter.

Opinion

John: “I think that Peter should break up with Jane. It’s not fair for her to keep lying to him about things. My ex lied to me all the time and it made me feel terrible. I ended up breaking up with her because I couldn’t trust her anymore.”

Sarah: “I know it’s wrong to lie in a relationship, but maybe Jane has a good reason for it. Maybe she’s trying to protect Peter from something. Like when my boyfriend was going through a tough time, I didn’t want to burden him with my problems, so I lied to him about how everything was going okay.”

Mike: “I don’t know what to think about this. On the one hand, lying is bad for any relationship. But on the other hand, Jane and Peter have been together for so long and have gone through so much. Maybe it’s worth trying to work things out instead of just breaking up.”

Emily: “Oh my God, that is just so messed up! How could Jane do that to poor Peter? I can’t imagine being in Peter’s shoes–he must feel so betrayed and hurt. If someone did that to me, I would be devastated and wouldn’t be able to forgive them.

What do you think?
